Then after that the gallery was open to the public and even when the gallery was closed our work was getting viewed through the large windows that front the gallery.

Final layout of my work in the exhibition…….....

Final layout of my work in the exhibition…….. 21/03/2012

After a lot of hard work organising labels, the Artist info sheet and getting together a list of prices… hanging day came. Ashlea and I utilised the same transport as our works were too big to transport in a taxi. We first stood all the work around the gallery in the space they were going to hang to decide on layout. After some moving around we got it all to look well together. Myself and another student had our plinths so they were in the center, so people could walk round and see the sculptures from all sides but this led to health and safety issues so a compromise had to be made which meant rather than 3 plinths only 2 could be used with them standing to the side of the space with my big sculpture being in the center as it didn’t pose any risks when in the center of the space. The 1 plinth less meant that the other students separate sculptures had to be placed on one plinth. To help separate the other students’ sculptures I gave one of my own small plinths to be used in the display of her work. After I helped with the hanging of everybody else’s work I hung my own but had to return the following day as we didn’t have time to hang mine to how I wanted it on the same day.

Exhibition in Corke Gallery…

I found this artist on the Saatchi Online website and thought how there concept is very similar to what I want to do. I want to show a kiss or closeness yet for it not all to be there, for the viewer to have to work it out or see different things in it. As in my 2D work I’m mainly showing kissing so I feel that this effects what I see in it… I see 2 people kissing but others have commented underneath saying ‘kissing or whispering?”… this is in reference to Lovers (2). In the others I like how they have blocked out the faces… In my work I have not used any recognisable facial features as I don’t want my work to be of someone, it is about what they are doing that is important. Doing this the way I have also makes my work less clear as in some of the silhouettes the person could be either boy or girl so again it makes it less obvious.

Continuation of Shadow work…

Originally I was looking at just displaying one sculpture, which would have been the clay one (central in the pic above) but for this piece to have the pressence that I would want it to have on a plinth on its own the piece would need to be bigger. I would love to do this however in the time that I have before the exhibition and my not having a lot of experience with plaster, which I would have to use I decided that I would not make it as well as I would want it. Experimentingwith some small plinths here I decided that showing 3 on one plinth would have an aesthetically pleasing look and they all work together well. So I went off to the workshop and with the help of Shaun I made my own plinths for the exhibition.

"One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something."

“One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something.”

- Henry David Thoreau

When I last photographed this sculpture it wasn’t dry....

When I last photographed this sculpture it wasn’t dry. When it had finally dried out I decided that I didn’t like the slight cracking that had occured in the drying process so using some filler I filled in the cracks which gave it a very clean smooth look. I then found a spot light to light it up and photographed it under it, which has really brought out the shape. I am really pleased with the outcome.

Christine and Len

Whilst doing some research online I came accross this artist who has recently been the subject of a homophobic attack at the gallery where his work was being shown.

I really like his styles… I say styles becsue the bottom left image is very simple in comparison to the one on the bottom right.

In the simple one I like the use of colour and feel the simplicity makes it a very aesthetically pleasing image but it does not do what I am trying to do in my work as it is very obvious and you know what it is about as soon as you see it.

In the one on the bottom right it is more confusing to the eye in a good way… I can’t tell whether it is one figure or 2… or what exactly is happening, which leaves it to the viewers imagination and to me makes it more interesting and intriguing, which makes you look at the image for longer.

Whist looking at silhouettes online to gain inspiration for...

Whist looking at silhouettes online to gain inspiration for furthering the idea formed in the pop-up exhibition I came accros this piece done by artist John Zachary…

The Claremont church dared to re-imagine the Nativity scene as three couples — gay, lesbian and heterosexual. They stood on the church lawn in life-sized silhouettes built from 600-pound light boxes. Each pair held hands beneath the star of Bethlehem. The words “Christ is born” blazed above them. There was no baby Jesus, but a small tree of life grew atop a statement pointing out that “Christ was the victim of hate and intolerance while he taught love and compassion.”… click to read more.

His pieces are very similar to mine in that they use light to create silhouettes but he has found a way of incorporating the light into the sculpture whereas in my pop-up exhibition piece the light was just hidden behind a screen. However I feel for my work the method that I have used will give me more avenues to explore with being able to explore overlaping images.

Pop-up Exhibition

It was my turn to partake in the Friday pop-up exhibitions for this semester. When I went in the morning I had no idea what I wanted to do and thought I would probably just display one of my mannequin or sculptural pieces around the building somewhere… After a slightly heated debate with Juan about people thinking my pieces that used the mannequin being about shopping and some batting round some ideas I decided to do something completely different from what I had been doing and went away and produced the above projection using 2 over head projectors and some calico hung over a frame.

I got comments saying that it is a warm/comfortable way of showing my subject which feels kind of everyday, which is good as I don’t really want it to be shocking or explicit. People also commented on how they thought it should have some movement in it.

This has completely opened up a different direction that my project could go in. I could play with colours with it, I could look at adding movement… I could project the images onto my sculptural pieces which could be quite interesting.

Alberto Giacometti

After seeing this piece titled Palace by the artist Alberto Giacometti in one of our lectures I wondered about adding the length of the legs to my sculpture in the same simple form that he has used in the image above, which I feel will complement the simplified form achieved by using the mannequin. So that is how my sculpture seen below evolved to be full height.

The Papier Mache piece continues…

This piece is ongoing and after boxing in one side of the torso I decided that it looked like it would work better like that with only one side hidden from view… and if this was put on display the boxed in side would be the side that the viewer would see before moving round the sculpture to discover the open/obvious side to what my work is about.

Wire Sculpture

I have used wire to make sculptures in the past and one night I felt like playing around with some wire that I had in. In this I wanted to create something that appeared to be a continued line giving the feel that the 2 figures are strongly connected, symbolising their connection as a couple. I really like how this sculpture has photographed with the shadow cast from the flash, I feel this gives a lot of interest. I would like to see this piece in a bigger scale as I feel it would have a good presence about it.

Marina Abramovic

In my work I have been looking at recreating the space between 2 people. Marina Abramovic has done this performance piece which is about the space beteen a couple and people having to pass inbetwen them, which I would imagine to be quite uncomfortable for the people wanting to visit the gallery. But another way of looking at the space between a couple.
